Look Outside updated to version 0.21!

I am still working on the big end-game quest. It exists in this update in an incomplete form. I thought I should put this up now, since there are many fixes and tweaks to the overall game in here. Think of this update as a bugfix update first, and a small preview of the incoming new content second.

(EDIT: Pushed another version, 0.21! Changelog for this is further down below!)

NEW IN 0.20:

New Content

  • Added a mechanic to make weapon breaking a bit more forgiving in the early game. (details about this below)
  • Added a bit more to some of the video game playing events (especially if you have some friends over at your apartment when you play)
  • Added a few news articles to see on your laptop (it was all placeholders before)
  • Added a bit more cash to find when exploring.
  • You now pick a name for yourself when you first speak to your neighbor.
  • There are also new NPCs, locations, puzzles and monsters, but these are mostly unfinished. You get a preview of what's coming!

Fixes

  • Fixed the issue where using food snack items closed the menu.
  • Merged some enemy encounters together.
  • Balanced cooking recipes, they were a bit too good. This will need more balancing later, for now I am still leaning on being forgiving with resources while I am still adding in new content - the resource management will get tighter after the content is more complete.
  • Fixed issue with food generating too many leftovers, and leftovers not rotting properly.
  • Fixed some other issues with cooking recipes (egg sandwich, pizza bites)
  • Fixed shotguns’ multi-shot attack.
  • Fixed many items that didn't break properly (they turned into other weapons instead of breaking)
  • Increased firepower of most ranged weapons, and increased the melee attack boost of two-handed firearms (attacking with the butt of the weapon).
  • Fixed the masked figure encounter
  • Fixed the safe in the teeth family bedroom.
  • Increased the morale boost from exploring when you return home, and added to morale when you slay monsters.
  • Fixed Hellens attacks.
  • Fixed the days remaining text when you wake up.
  • Lowered base volume of several music tracks, they were mixed too loud, drowned the SFX
  • Fixed the Benjamin encounter’s last scene, and clarified some of the dialogue to make it a bit easier to figure out.
  • Fixed some objects changing sprites when you interact with them (though probably missed a few!)
  • Fixed some monster corpses preventing you from interacting with items nearby if you stand on top of them (though probably missed a few!)
  • Fixed that sleeping didn't bring back unconscious allies.

NEW IN 0.21:

  • Forced the player to speak to the neighbor so they enter their name before leaving.
  • Made enemies freeze when you are in a dialogue or examining something. (scary: this could cause bugs! We'll see! Seems good so far.)
  • Added some more talking with the plant.
  • Put in proper dialogue for some characters that had placeholder dialogue before.
  • Fixed a few misc problems found since 0.20 - door to the dark room didnt open when you had the key, the Witness monster didnt behave properly when it moved close, and a few more tidbits.

About the weapon breaking changes:

On day 1, weapons now break half as often, and you get two mulligans on weapons breaking at the start of the game. You get one mulligan back at the start of every day. This should help make melee weapon breaking a bit more forgiving, and will especially help at the start of the game, where running out of weapons feel more like simple bad luck than a management mistake from the player.

To-do list for next update:

  • Finish and test full ending quest
  • Add proper encounters and battles to ground floor and basement
  • Implement final bosses

And to-do list for the update after that:

  • Add more monsters at night
  • Balance out enemy encounters, items and resources.
  • Balance out the survival mechanics better.
  • Fix more multi-enemy encounters.

Incredible game. It delights my soul. I would be glad to pay for it, should it ever release on Steam.
